ABOUT US
LOCAL FLORA is owned and operated by Nidia and Christopher Alston. A husband and wife team dedicated to preserving our local ecology. In 1997, LOCAL FLORA was granted a Wildlife Management Plan and became one of the first teams dedicated to the Blackland Prairie.
Christopher learned to fully appreciate native plants, through a class taught by Dr Nixon at Stephen F Austin University. The class, Local Flora was an intense and comprehensive look at most of Texas' finest flora. Your Local Flora per Dr. Nixon was defined as "every plant within a radius of 50 miles from where we are standing." Studying with Dr Nixon left an indelible impression which quickly evolved into a passion. Christopher has always remembered Dr. Nixon's influence and since that time he has been intrigued with everyday beauty found right at our footsteps.

ABOUT OUR ECOLOGICAL REGION
We are located in the Blackland Prairie ecological region of North Central Texas, on the boarders of Collin and Hunt Counties. The Blackland Prairies take their name from the fertile, dark clay soil that constitutes a true prairie ecosystem. Our area has some of the richest, most naturally fertile soils in the world. Characterized by gentle, rolling highs and nearly level topography, the land is well-dissected and marked by rapid surface drainage. In this tall-grass prairie, the dominant grass is Little Bluestem, with other important grasses including Big Bluestem, Indiangrass, Eastern Grama Grass, Switchgrass, and Sideoats Grama. The local landscape is dotted by the following trees and shrubs:
